Freedom boxes

Scope note

Silver or gold boxes or caskets, usually rectangular in form but sometimes circular or oval, which are given to a person granted the freedom of, for example, a city, town, or college. Usually engraved, chased, or enameled with the coat of arms of the recipient and donor, and often an appropriate inscription.
