Depressed center flatcars

Scope note

Use for flatcars having a portion of the floor set lower than the deck to accommodate special loads with oversized vertical dimensions; in use since the early 20th century. For flatcars in use since the mid-20th century with larger depressed central sections designed primarily to accommodate intermodal containers, use "well cars."
