Tankard/Mug. Unidentified Nottingham pottery, England. Cylindrical with slightly projecting base, two projecting bands below the handle and one level with its junction with the body at the top, and a row of oval beading round the rim. The ear-shaped handle is reeded and has an upward kick at the bottom. The front is incised with a flowering bush painted with dark brown slip. Four stilt marks on base. Brown salt-glazed stoneware, thrown, turned, rouletted, incised and painted with dark-brown slip. Height, whole, 18.0 cm, diameter, base, 11.3 cm, width, whole incl handle, 14.5 cm, circa 1750-1770. Production Note: Incised and slip-painted decoration is the rarest kind of decoration on Nottingham salt-glazed stoneware, and has been found on dated objects ranging from 1747 to 1771.
