Description

Brown salt-glazed stoneware, thrown, turned, rouletted, incised and painted with dark brown slip. Cylindrical with slightly projecting base, two projecting bands below the handle and one level with its junction with the body at the top, and a row of oval beading round the rim. The ear-shaped handle is reeded and has an upward kick at the bottom. The front is incised with a flowering plant filled in with dark brown slip. Four stilt marks on base.

Note

This mug illustrates the very shiny, almost lustrous brown surface which is typical of Nottingham brown salt-glazed stoneware. Incised and slip-painted decoration is the rarest kind of decoration on Nottingham brown salt-glazed stoneware, and has been found on dated objects ranging from 1747 to 1771.
