Tankard. SA, silversmith, Augsburg. Flötner, Peter, after (German, c.1485-1546). The sloping cylindrical sides are embossed and chased with an elaborate pattern of straps containing etched Arabesques and three applied cast relief medallions of Charity, Hope and Temperance. The similarly decorated stepped cover is sumounted by a figure of a young Bacchus and has a thumb-piece in the form of a double tailed mermaid. The spreading circular foot and the rim of the neck are decorated with a border of flattened beads. The D-shaped handle is engraved with a border of Arabesques and has an applied acanthus leaf at the top. Silver whole, gold surface (silver-gilt, embossed, chased and etched), height, to top of finial, 17 cm, diameter, base, 11.3 cm, weight, whole, 480 g, circa 1570-1600. Renaissance. Notes: The young Bacchus finial is almost certainly a replacement. The gilding is later. The plaques of Charity, Hope, and Temperance are after plaquettes by a follower of Peter Flötner, after rectangular plaques by Flötner.
