Description

Silver-gilt; tapering sides chased and etched with straps enclosing three cast medallions of Charity, Hope and Temperance; the cover with a figure of Bacchus

Silver-gilt, embossed, chased and etched. The sloping cylindrical sides are embossed and chased with an elaborate pattern of straps containing etched Arabesques and three applied cast relief medallions of Charity, Hope and Temperance. The similarly decorated stepped cover is sumounted by a figure of a young Bacchus and has a thumb-piece in the form of a double tailed mermaid. The spreading circular foot and the rim of the neck are decorated with a border of flattened beads. The D-shaped handle is engraved with a border of Arabesques and has an applied acanthus leaf at the top.

The plaques of Charity, Hope, and Temperance are after plaquettes by a follower of Peter Flötner, after rectangular plaques by Flötner.

The young Bacchus finial is almost certainly a replacement. The gilding is later.
