Silver Austrian covered jug embossed with shells

An image of Covered jug. Uncertain silversmith, Austria, Vienna. Embossed with shells and the mask of a bearded man, and standing on three scroll legs with shell feet. Of circular section with an elongated neck embossed with two shells above a moulded girdle. The lower part of the body is almost hemispherical and has a band of applied ornament. It stands on three scroll legs with shell feet and capitals. The spout has a hinged cover, and at its base is a mask of a bearded man. The domed cover is embossed with two shells and a band of scrolling foliage round the cast bud finial. The harp-shaped handle is capped with an acanthus leaf above a border of husks. The jug is constructed in several sections by raising and casting. The parts are soldered and the border applied. It is decorated by embossing and chasing. Silver, height, to top of finial, 30.1 cm, width, spout to handle, 22.8 cm, weight, gross, 1812 g, 1741. Production Note: Maker's mark, IP not identified. Accessioned as a coffee pot.
