An image of Netsuke: katabori: Group of five horses. Shigehiro, Osaka School, Japan. Five horses arranged to form a rectangular group, three standing and two reclining, each with inlaid eyes. The legs and tails are entwined creating a latticework effect on the underside. The manes and tails are finely carved. Natural himotoshi are formed by the legs and tails. Ivory, carved and polished, height 2.5 cm, width 4.4 cm, circa 1868-1900. Edo Period (1615-1868). Collection: H.S. Reitlinger. Notes: The Horse (uma) is seen by the Japanese as an emblem of virility and endurance.
