Netsuke: katabori: Basket maker. Hokei, 19th century, Japan. Figure of a man (a basket weaver?) wearing only a loin cloth and seated on a basket whilst holding the handle with two hands and steadying it with his right foot, with a look of intense concentration. Crudely carved with details of the basket finely carved. Himotoshi with inset circular ivory ring. Wood and ivory, carved and stained, height, whole, 4.5 cm, width, whole, 4.9 cm, circa 1800-1868. Edo Period (1615-1868).
