Image attached to C.20-2014

An image of Cider Jar. Cardew, Michael, potter (British, 1901-1983). The large ovoid jar has a short narrow cylindrical neck to which is attached a pulled handle. On the opposite side of the body about 2.5 cm up from the base there is a short tubular projection into which a wooden spigot is inserted. White slip is trailed around the neck and down the back of the handle. The widest part of the body is decorated with two trailed manganese-black wavy lines, each edged with trailed white slip, appearing yellow under the lead-glaze. Red-brown earthenware, thrown, white and manganese-black slip decoration, upper surface lead-glazed, height, whole, 33.1 cm, width, whole, 27.6 cm, diameter, base, 15 cm, circa 1933-1939. The form of this cider jar resembles a Rhenish stoneware 'Bellarmine'. The form was introduced at Winchcombe pottery about 1933.
