Silver tankard, by Georg Brechtel

An image of Tankard. Brechtel, Georg, silversmith (active 1594; died 1632, Augsburg). The tall slender body with sloping cylindrical sides is embossed with a formal pattern of strapwork containing scrolls, fruit and flowers on a matted ground. It stands on a slightly domed spreading circular foot. The slightly domed cover is similarly decorated with a baluster knop. The scroll handle has a bi-furcated thumb-piece. Silver-gilt, embossed, cast finial, raised cover, height, to top of finial, 22.6 cm, diameter, base, 13 cm, weight, whole, 785 g, circa 1595-1600. Mannerist.
