  • Illuminated manuscript. Cutting. Miniature from a Gradual. Production Place: Central Italy, probably Milan. Parchment, gold, 207 x 199 mm, two four-line musical staves ruled in red, two lines of fragmentary text ruled in brown ink, circa 1530. CONTENTS: On reverse, part of the Introit to the Mass for Pentecost Sunday: [Spiritus Domini replevit orbem terrarum: et hoc quod continent omnia, scienti]am habet [vocis, all]eluia, all[eluia, alleluia] (Wisdom 1.7; Ps 67.2); the initial S on the recto would have introduced the Introit. DECORATION: Miniature framed in gold: Pentecost, set within a classical interior. ORNAMENTATION: Foliate initial [S] on a square ground of solid gold set at the outer edge of the miniature.
