Miniature from a Gradual
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 207 x 199 mm, two four-line musical staves ruled in red, two lines of fragmentary text ruled in brown ink.
CONTENTS: On reverse, part of the Introit to the Mass for Pentecost Sunday: [Spiritus Domini replevit orbem terrarum: et hoc quod continent omnia, scienti]am habet [vocis, all]eluia, all[eluia, alleluia] (Wisdom 1.7; Ps 67.2); the initial S on the recto would have introduced the Introit.
DECORATION: Miniature framed in gold: Pentecost, set within a classical interior.
ORNAMENTATION: Foliate initial [S] on a square ground of solid gold set at the outer edge of the miniature.
History note: Sold by a German bookseller, probably in the nineteenth century (note with lot no. 566 pasted onto old mount; note 566 pencilled twice on reverse)
