Medieval casket with champlevé enamel and silver plaques

An image of Casket. Unknown maker, England. Unknown maker, Meuse, Mosan. Rectangular with a lid of truncated pyramidal form. The sides are overlaid with thin D-shaped plates of silver embossed with figures of angels; the spandrels have embossed vine scrolls in gold. Along the top of the lid there is a strip of silver embossed with palmettes, the rest is covered with champlevé enamel. Copper, engraved, champlevé, enamelled, and gilded, with applied repoussé silver plaques, the box interior of wood, height, whole, 5.7 cm, width, whole, 11 cm, depth, whole, 5.8 cm, circa 1170-1200. Enamels late 12th century; plaques c. 1170; wooden interior modern (date uncertain). Romanesque.
