Fans/ Wedge-shaped brisé fan. Unknown maker. Front: The decoration is arranged in four horizontal bands. 1. Geometrical motifs, pierced and painted red, green and gold. 2. A European outdoor scene in which two servants bring a pig or tiger to a pipe-smoking gentleman seated beside a standing gentleman who is extending his arm towards another servant, who carries a stick. On both sides there is a long-tailed exotic bird among flowers and foliage. 3.Three oval panels reserved in a red band, the centre oval is painted with a crab and a fish, the others with stylized plants. 4. Foliage and flowers. The area below the shoulder is undecorated. Reverse: The same design reversed. Guards: Prunus sprays. Ivory sticks, pierced, painted in red, green, slate blue, brown, black, and gold. Guards plain ivory painted in brown, red, green and gold, the head strengthened with tortoiseshell. (20+2) Gold stringing. Rivet of brass? Length, guards, 25.6 cm, circa 1710- circa 1720. Production Note: Chinese for European market, possibly made in China and painted in Holland.
