  • Text: every idea of cultivation, we wish them totally to dis- / -appear. / As there are however instances in the grand style of land- / scape, in which sublimity alone(underlined) is introduced; so there are / inferior modes of landscape, in wh. low vulgarisms may pro- / -perly make a part _ cottages _ carts _ hay-making _ harvesting / - and other employments of husbandry._ This low mode of / landscape is not however now in question: we are here con- / -sidering such landscape only, as in part introduces the sub- / lime idea; & in part the rural embellishment. / We may observe farther, that landscap more, or less / approaches the grand(underlined) style, as it is more, or less adorned with / these embellishments. Thus when rocks are tufted with trees / or shrubs, a degree of amenity is introduced. As these are / increased, the idea improves: as they are removed, it lesses; / and in proportion, the grand(underlined) style prevails. If you remove / them
