  • Text: view to endeavour to please the eye. He shd. aim to make / the country he carries us through, such, as we shd. wish to in- / habit; or at least to examine. Different people, no doubt, / are pleased with different modes of landscape; & the painter / has only his own taste to direct him. He ought still how- / ever to aim at what he conceives to be an interesting country, whether he paint in the sublime, or beautiful stile. / There is one thing more, wh. contributes to give plea- / sure in landscape, when it can be obtained; & that is to interest the imagination(underlined) of the spectator, as well as his eye(underlined). / When we see a pleasing landscape in nature(underlined), we not only wish to enjoy it; but we are incited by the beauty of what / we see, to proceed in the same direction in search of [the same] / scenes of the same kind, which we suppose it may lead to. / It shd. be thus in artificial landscape. When we see a plea- / sing scene, we cannot help supposing, there are other beaut- / -ful
