Folding fan, the paper leaf painted in polychrome on the front with a statue of Cupid and figures of young men and women in a landscape, and borders of scrolls, flowers, and foliage, mounted on mother-of-pearl sticks, pierced and decorated with quatrecouleur gold foil
Folding fan with double-sided paper leaf, painted in polychrome gouache (?) with mother-of-pear sticks and guards (12 + 2) decorated with quatrecouleur gold foil. The front of the leaf is painted with a landscape in the centre of which is a girl decking a floral garland over a statue of Cupid on a pedestal. On the left is a kneeling boy holding a sheep, and further to the left, a dog beside a boy seated on the ground. On the right there is a putto standing beside a girl who has a basket of flowers under her left arm, and further to the right a seated lady holding up her hands. The two ends and the upper and lower borders are decorated with gold scrolls, flowers, and foliage.The back of the leaf is decorated with a girl seated under a trellis arch in a landscape with knarled trees and expanses of water. At each end and on the top border there are blue scrolls, flowers, and foliage.The top of the guards are each pierced with a male figure below two drapes, and on the lower part with a fluted cloumn on which are trophies and floral sprays. Three pairs of sticks are decorated with an oval medallion containing a trophy, and six sticks flanking these have a wavy column with diagonal floral sprays over it at intervals.
History note: Probably Colonel Leonard Messel (d. 1953); Anne, Countess of Rosse (d. 1992) by whom given to the testator in acknowledgement of his help in designing a memorial to her husband
