Description

Whitework sampler made of two kinds of linen. Joined strips enclose two cutwork panels, the upper worked with needle lace filling stitches, the lower panel with hollie point and picot bars. The bottom strip is embroidered with linen thread in satin and double hemstitch. The edges are finished with buttonhole bullions. The upper band consists of geometric shapes whilst the bottom band is figurative, containing a male and female figure, possibly depicting Abraham and Sarah. Beneath is the inscription 'Elizabeth Hinde 1643' embroidered in white linen thread.
