Description

Band sampler worked in polychrome silks embroidered in a variety of stitches, depicting floral border patterns which include detached and padded work, a pictorial band and an inscription.

Linen band sampler embroidered in polychrome silks in double running, cross, long armed cross, Montenegrin cross, chain, satin, herringbone and whipped stem stitch, Algerian eye, hem and trellis stitch with detached needlepoint filling stitches and some couching. There is a plain selvedge at the bottom, the other edges are hemmed. The sampler is divided into twenty-two bands; the upper twelve of horizontal repeat floral border patterns which include detached and padded work. Beneath these is a wide pictorial band of a man and a women holding hands beneath an arbour of vines with a tree either side and various detached motifs of birds and butterflies; in the foreground there are two dogs, a cat, a rabbit and a frog. The inscription beneath reads 'I AM A MAID BVT YOVNG MY SKILL/IS Yet BVT SMALL BVT GOD/ I HOP WILL BLeS Me SO I MAY LIVe/ TO MeND THIS ALL RACHeL LOADer/ WROVGHT THIS SAMPLeR BeING/ TWeLVe YeARS OVLD THe TeNTH/ DAY DeSeMBeR 1666 H L'. The last two bands are worked in geometric repeating patterns.
