Description

Band sampler linen, worked in a variety of stitches, depicting horizontal repeating floral border motifs, small all-over designs and detached motifs of animals.

Linen band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks and wool in cross, Montenegrin cross, crosslet, double running, trellis, satin, stem and Algerian eye stitch with some speckling. There are plain selvedges at both top and bottom and the sides are hemmed. The sampler consists predominantly of horizontal repeating floral border motifs one including a pineapple motif; some worked with two patterns to a band and some worked with vertical bands crossing the horizontal one's. The lower two bands contain an alphabet, the initials 'S H' and the date '1683'. The bottom 11cm contain numerous small all-over designs and detached motifs including an owl, frog, dog, stag, hand,insects, and birds.
