Description

Band sampler, unbleached linen, embroidered with blue crewel wool and a little brown sillk and red wool in cross, four sided cross and double running stitch. The top of the sampler is filled with parts of three sprigs and a repeat border design. Beneath this are 15 horizontal bands comprising alphabets and more border designs. The edges have some short lengths of needle lace stitches.

Note

This is most probably 'Coventry Blue' a crewel thread dyed with woad, which is used for marking linen. Woad is an annual Old World plant (Isatis tinctoria) of the mustard family, formerly cultivated for its leaves that yield a blue dye.
