Band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks, linen and silver metal thread in a wide variety of stitches. The design comprises five coloured bands and seventeen whitework bands and includes an inscription of a verse and initials.
Linen band sampler embroidered in polychrome silk and silver metal thread in cross, Montenegrin cross, double running, satin, chain, crosslet, eyelet and trellis stitch and small metal thread bosses. Linen thread is worked in hem, counted satin, double running, eyelet, buttonhole, dot and stem stitch with buttonhole bars. There is also cut and drawn work with needle weaving and needlepoint lace filling stitches. All edges are hemmed. The sampler is divided into five coloured and seventeen whitework bands. The five coloured bands are at the top decorated with ornate horizontal repeating floral border patterns and three bands of inscription 'LOOK WeLL to thAt Thov tAKest INH/HAND Its Better WOrth TheN house/or LANd WheN LANd IS GONe ANd M' the whitework comprises mainly geometric repeating border patterns, a continuation of the above inscription and at the bottom, three further bands of inscription and a final band of repeating dot stitch pattern. The inscription continues; 'MONey IS SPeNt TheN LeArn/INg IS Most EXCeLeNt'. And at the bottom 'Let Vertve Be ThY Guide ANd it WILL Kee/P The Out of PriDe. ELIZAbeth CreaSeY/ Her Work DONe in The YeAr 1686 Id Sd'.
