Description

Band sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks and linen thread in cross, eyelet hole, double running and satin stitches. The sampler comprises 20 horizontal bands which include repeat border patterns, alphabets and the inscriptions ' Elizabeth Hopkins 1711' and 'WHeN I WAS YOUNg I LIttLe Thought That Wit M/ ust Be So Dearly Bought But Now Experieance TeLs/ Me How If I WOULD Thrive Th t I Must Bow A/ ND BeND Vnto Anothers Will That I Might Learn Both / Art And SkiLL To Get My LIVINg With My HANDS / So That I Might Be Free From BONds That Mine / Own Dame Then I might Be AND Freed From ALL Such / Slaverie 123456789X XI XII EH WH AH'.
