Maker: Rixton, Mary
Band sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silk in cross, eyelet hole, four-sided cross, double running and satin stitch. The sampler comprises 20 horizontal bands which contain alphabets, repeat border patterns (several of which are incomplete), numerals, and the inscription ' Iohn Rixton Ellen Rixton Iosjah Rixton, Ellen Rixton/ Love the Lord and he will be a tender father unto the/If all mankind would live in mutual love/This world would much resemble that above/ this work of mine my friends may have/ when i am dead and in my grave/ Mary Rixton worked this sampler in the year 1730'. The bottom band contains detached motifs of a peacock, a strawberry, a crown, a lion and a cross.
