The sampler comprises 18 horizontal bands which depict alphabets, numerals, repeat border patterns, crowns and coronets, the name and date 'Mary Read 17 may 1737', and the inscriptions 'Mary Read finished this sampler', ' May the 17: 1736 Mary Read began/ constraint in all things makes the/pleasure less sweet in the love/that comes with willingness/ Greatness in virtue only's understood/Nones truly Great that is not truly God/Your veneration of Jehovah's name/By Observation of his Laws Proclaim/Your memory with Choicest treasure store/ and never Vertues heavenly course give ore/ Mary Read finished this sampler'.
