Description

Band sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, buttonhole, double running and satin stitch. The edges are buttonholed. The sampler comprises 23 horizontal bands which include an alphabet and lettering, numerals, repeat border patterns, crowns and coronets, flowering plants and flowers, the name and date 'Elizabeth Dainty 1742', and the inscription 'Flavour is deceitfull and beauty is vain but a woman/that Feareth the Lord She shall be PraiSed. Many/Daugthers have done virtuouSly but thou excelleSt/ them all. proverbs Chapter xxxi verSes 29 and 30',' Elizabeth Dainty Wrought this Sampler Anno/Domini 1742 in the ninth year of her Age'.
