Description

Band sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks in a variety of stitches. The sampler is horizontally worked and includes repeating border patterns, an alphabet, a bottom band of a balanced arrangement of detached motifs and the date '1754', a wide pictorial section and two inscriptions.

Linen band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, counted satin, encroaching satin and eyelet stitch. All four edges are bound at the back with a narrow strip of yellow linen. The sampler is horizontally worked and includes repeating border patterns, an alphabet, a bottom band of a balanced arrangement of detached motifs and the date '1754', a wide pictorial section and two inscriptions. The picture is of a central building with a bird on each of the two turrets, flanked by similar hills with a crucifix, a stag, a dog, a crowned lion and a flowering plant. The first inscription reads 'THe Grass WIThereTH THe FLOWeR/FaDeTH and the second' Praise the lord all ye heathen/ O Praise him all ye Nations/ for his merciful Kindness is evermore/ and more towards us and the truth/ of the Lord endureth for ever/ Praise the Lord'. 'Psalm ye CXVII' is placed at the end of the lines one and two and 'Catherine BENSKIN' on either side of the final line.
