Border sampler, canvas, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, satin, counted satin, encroaching satin and eyelet stitch featuring a carnation repeating border, repeating floral border patterns, initials and inscriptions.
Canvas border sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, satin, counted satin, encroaching satin and eyelet stitch. There is a double blue line selvedge on both sides, the top and bottom edges are damaged, and the whole sampler is tacked onto a supporting cotton backing. A carnation repeating border surrounds the whole sampler. There are five horizontal bands with two lines of inscriptions between each. Band one, three and four are repeating floral border patterns. The second band is of three similar flowerpots with perching birds set on small green mounds separated by flowering trees with perching birds, with smaller flowerpots, two detached heart motifs and the initials 'A H'. The fifth bands has a central fruiting tree flanked by crowns and the initials 'G C' stags, fruit baskets with birds and dogs. The inscriptions read 'All You my Friends That now Expect To See A Piece of Work Thus Performed By me/ Cast But A Smile upon my small indever Ile strive To Mind and Be Obedient Ever', 'Then I'll NOT Be proud OF my Youth nor my Beauty sence Both of Them Wither and fade/But Gain a Good name By well Duing my Duty. This will sent Like a Rose When I am dead', ' BLest be the Lord That Sent his Son To take our Flesh and Blood He For our LiVes Gave/UP his own To make our Peace With God.
