Description

Bordered sampler, canvas, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, eyelet hole and satin stitch. A floral border frames the main body of the sampler which comprises 11 horizontal bands. These include an alphabet, numerals, repeat border patterns, a flowering tree, a bush, an urn of flowers, a vase of flowers, a bird and the inscriptions ' On wisdom/Wisdom the greatest Blessing from above/ sent to mankind by god in his great Love/Directs the Youth to Knowledge the (n to) Peace/So leads to solid Joys that never Cease', 'Let me be wise in youth O lord that so/I Safe may Tread the way I Ought to Go/Lead me and Learn me what is right and Just/For in thy Help, my God I place my Trust', 'Ecclesiastes c.XII VI', 'Greatness in Virtue only's understood/None's truly great that is not truly good', and 'Anna Maria Dobson Her Work/Finish'd in the Eleventh Year of Her/ Age 1773'.
