Maker: Merriman, Ann
Bordered sampler, canvas, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, satin, eyelet hole and tent stitch. A floral border frames the main body of the sampler which comprises three horizontal sections separated by repeat border patterns. The top section contains an inscription, a flowering plant and a fruit tree. Section two also includes an inscription, meadows with trees and sheep. The third section includes the name, date and inscription 'Ann Merriman/her work in her/9th year/ 1785' inside a heart, a bird on a spray, a church inside a churchyard with trees, a house and garden and some birds in flight. The inscription reads ' Let me be Wise in youth O lord that So/ I safe may tread the way I ought to go/Lead me, and learn me, what is right and just/And in thy help (O G)od, to place my trust/ A wiSe man's Head excels a Strong man's Hands/WiSdom diSpoles Fields, and orders Lands/From wild tumultuous Rage she guards a Realm/And Ships go Safe when WiSdom guides the Helm'.
