Description

Band sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross and satin stitch. The sides are damaged. The sampler is horizontally arranged with repeating geometric and floral border patterns, two alphabets, a set of numerals , an inscription, various detached motifs, and a symmetrical arrangement of detached flowerpots, birds and trees around the Temptation of Adam and Eve.

Woollen band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross and satin stitch. The sides are damaged, but there are remains of a double blue linen selvedge; the top and bottom are turned in and the whole is mounted on a supporting cotton canvas. The sampler is horizontally arranged with repeating geometric and floral border patterns at the top, two alphabets, a set of numerals and the inscription 'HealtH is aIeWeL drOPt from HeaVen Which money cannot/buy the Life of Life the Bodies Peace and Pleasant Harmony'. The next section is made up of various detached motifs including fruit baskets, birds, small rural scenes of trees, stags, dogs, squirrels, soldiers with muskets, arranged symmetrically either side of a turreted building with perching birds and a flag. The third section in another symmetrical arrangement of detached flowerpots, birds and trees around the Temptation of Adam and Eve. the lowest section has a central panel enclosing two crowns and the inscription 'Sophia ELLis/finished this Work/february the 8 1785 in/the 9year of her age. to either side of the panel is a swan, flower spray, stag and two dogs.
