Band sampler, linen, embroidered with linen thread and polychrome silks in cross, double hem, eyelet hole, satin and needle point lace stitches. The sampler comprises 34 horizontal bands of repeat border patterns, alphabets and inscriptions.

The sampler comprises 34 horizontal bands of repeat border patterns, alphabets and the inscriptions 'Mary Clay 1696' (the only use of coloured silks on the sampler), and the verse ' Love The Lord and he wi/ll be a tender f/ather vnto thee/ Look well to that the/Takest in hand it/is better worth then h/ouse or land whe/n land is gone and mon/y is spent then l/earning is most e/xcellent two things/ have I required/of thee deny me/them not before r/c move far from mee vanity and/lies give mee neither poverty nor rich/es feed mee wit/h food convenient for m/ee lest I full and deny thee'.
