Description

Bordered sampler, canvas, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, Montenegrin cross, tent, eyelet and stem stitch. The sampler features a floral border pattern and five horizontal sections, which include inscriptions, the Temptation of Adam and Eve, and inscribed panels.

Canvas border sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, Montenegrin cross, tent, eyelet and stem stitch. All the edges are framed with pale blue watered silk. A floral border pattern surrounds the main body of the sampler. There is a parrot in both top corners and a lion in both the bottom one's. There are five horizontal sections; the first and third contain inscriptions.' Teach me Wisdom Secretly O Lord God That I may run the ways/of thy commandments with great delight. A.S. Began This 1766/ for as by one mans disobedience many were made sinners; so/by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous'. The second section contains a central flower spray within a symmetrical arrangement of flower sprays, birds, stags and trees. The fourth section depicts the Temptation of Adam and Eve, with a tree, flowers and birds on either side. The final section has three flower sprays with two inscribed panels between them containing small detached motifs and the words 'Ann/Smith/Finished/This' in one and 'Work/March 4/1767' in the other.
