Description

Bordered sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, satin and stem stitch. The sampler is linen with Brussels net and bound with corded ribbon. A waved stem border, with leaves and tied at the bottom by a bird, frames the main body of the sampler which comprises the inscription 'On the 8th of September 1783/Hibernea's Sons let this Auspicious day/To Bristols Earl your Grateful Tribute pay/Let Irelands Records Consecrate his Name/ Proclaim his worth Immortalize his fame/Whose Gen'rous foul Aspires to make you free/Prevent your Chains and give you Liberty/ Caroline Lepel Fuller 1789/aged 9 years'.
