Linen darning sampler worked with polychrome silks and white linen thread in counted thread patterns or damask darning and cross-stitch. There are two plain linen and eleven two-coloured darning examples arranged on the sampler. The central square of each has been cut away and filled with a darning pattern; the stitching is extended into the bordering linen. The central darn is worked in linen thread and surrounded by the inscription 'Mary powell/Finish'd this/Darning Piece/Octr the 26 1789'.
