Description

Woollen bordered sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross-stitch. All the edges are bound in green silk ribbon. A repeating geometric border pattern surrounds the sampler. The main body is divided into two horizontal sections by a repeating floral border pattern. The largest upper section contains a balanced arrangement of detached flowerpots, flowering trees and sprays with central verse ' See Israels gentle shepherd stand/ With all engaging charms/Hark how he calls the tender lambs/ And folds them in his arms/ Permit then to approach he cries/ nor scorn their humble name/ for twas to bless such souls as these/ The lord of angels came.' the lower section contains similar detached motifs arranged symmetrically either side of a large flower spray. Above them the inscription 'Catherine Cooks Work Brierly hill School 1812'.
