Tiffany band sampler embroidered with black silk thread worked in very fine cross and a little marking cross-stitch. All the edges are hemmed, a central seam is over sewn and the whole is mounted on cream satin. A single line of cross-stitch surrounds the whole sampler. Four narrow geometric repeating border patterns divide the sampler horizontally with four narrow bands at the top containing three alphabets and two sets of numerals. The largest section contains the inscriptions' The character of the person who commends you is to be considered before/ you set much value on his praise.' 'To err is human, to forgive, divine.' ' True wisdom consist in the regulation and government of the/passions, and not in a technical knowledge of arts and sciences/ Octr 19th. Lucy Titshall. 1816.'
