Description

Bordered sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross-stitch. The edges are bound with a dark red ribbon. The main part of the sampler is framed by a rosebud and pansy border with strawberries in the corners. The upper portion features a pastoral scene, including a hill, trees, birds, a farmhouse, a windmill and cows. The remainder of the sampler is taken up by a verse framed by symmetrically arranged detached motifs. The verse reads 'Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand/As the First efforts of an Infants Hand/And while my Fingers on the Canvas Move/Engage my sinful Heart to seek thy Love/ With thy dear children Lord give me a part/ And write thy Image on my Heart/ Rachel Lee Aged 11/1821'
