Border sampler, canvas, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross and satin stitch and bound with brown linen. A strawberry border frames the main body of the sampler which comprises seven horizontal bands separated by border designs of varying width. The band s include an alphabet, numerals, the name 'Elizabeth Clarke', five detached motifs (crown, heart, lozenge) and the inscription 'In gratitude perverts all the measures of religion and society by making it dangerous to be charitable/ and good natured: however, it is better expose ourselves to Ingratitude than be wanting to be distressed/ whenever you commend add your reason for doing so; it is this which distinguishes the approbation of a/man of sense from the flattery of sycophants and the admiration of fools/Prudence has two offices to inform the understanding and regulate the will she determines/ both on maxims of speculation and practice & she keeps the mind upon its guard/ favour is deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman that Feareth the Lords she shall be praiSed/ Envy not thy benefactor, neither Strive to conceal the benefit he hath conferred, for though to/oblige is better than to be obliged; the act of generoSity commandeth admiration yet the /humility of gratitude toucheth the heart and is amiable in the light both of God and man'.
