Description

Linen sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in damask and pattern darning and tent stitch with applied silver metal wire braid. The edges are covered by gathered pink silk ribbon with silver metal wire trimmings. The sampler is made up of twenty darning rectangles arranged in four horizontal rows of five. they are very varied in style and colour; as well as conventional monochrome damask patterns and the multi-coloured stripes, there are also more complex imitation woven repeat patterns among them. An inscription has been worked in the centre in a mixture of Flemish and Latin which reads 'BH. den 22: ANNO:1760'
