Pictorial and spot motif sampler embroidered with polychrome silks with a densely worked motif of flowers, animals and a large central Monogram of Our lady.
Linen sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in buttonhole, chain, fishbone, and stem stitch with laid and couched work and French knots. All hedges are hemmed and trimmed with pink and blue silk ribbon, bobbin lace and incomplete silk bows. The densely worked sampler is divided in three large sections. The top section contains the Monogram of Our Lady surrounded by stylized floral sprays, pots and birds, the second the armorial bearings of the Order of the Carmelite nuns and those of the Inquisition flanked by two exotic birds,one the Quetzel the national symbol of Guatamala, a unicorn and deer, and the third a scene of a large animal and a man holding a sword. The thin horizontal band between the second and third panel contains the inscription ' LOHIZO ANTONIA SANCHEZ ANO DEL 1738'.

The large green and red bird, a Quetzel, is the national symbol of Guatemala which confirms the samplers colonial origins. Antonia Sanchez was born in 1728 in Quezaltenango, and married in 1742 at the age of 14.
