Border sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross-stitch. a strawberry border frames the main body of the sampler which comprises five horizontal bands. These contain an alphabet, numerals, a border design, an inscription, the name and date 'Sophia Laysell 1833', a symmetrical arrangement of detached motifs, a lion and a unicorn, a debased version of the Royal arms, angels holding a crown and a wreath, flower and fruit baskets, a swan, stars, the Temptation of Adam and eve, and the inscription 'Naked As From The earth We came/ and Crept To Life At first/ We To The Earth return Again/ and Mingle With Jus Dust/ This Sampler Was worked By Sophia Laysell In The Year Of Our Lord 1833. In The Year Of her Age'.
