Description

Border sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross-stitch. A waved stem, flower bud and leaf border frames the main body of the sampler which comprises four horizontal bands. These include alphabets, numerals, waved stem borders with geometrical flowers, a large crown, a fruit basket, a flower in a two handled vase, a flowering plant in a pot, clipped bushes, the name and date 'Caroline Collins, aged 11, George IV 1820-1830' and the verse 'On Charity/ Charity, decent, modest, easy, kind/Softens the high and rears the abject mind/knows with just reins and gentle hand to guide/Betwixt vile shame and arbitrary pride/Not soon provoked she easily forgives/ and much she suffers as she believes'.
