Sampler, wool, embroidered with polychrome silks in stain and cross-stitch. There is a selvedge on both sides and the top and bottom are turned under and stitched. A honeysuckle border and a horizontal repeat floral band divide the sampler into two sections. In the upper section there is a star; angels, flowerpots and birds on either side of the verse 'On Good Friday/ Dear Saviour oh what ails this Heart/Sure tis stone it cannot smart/ We yet relent the death of thee/ Whose death alone could ransom me'. In the lower section symmetrically arranged detached motifs accompany the inscription 'Can I behold thy pains so great/ Thy dying sighs thy bloody sweat/Canst thou pour forth such streams for me/ And I not drop one tear for thee', 'Mary Ann Harley 1817' and a pastoral scene including a house and a windmill.
