Band sampler, linen, embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, rococo, Florentine, double running and tent stitch. There is a selvedge on one side, the other edges are turned under and stitched. The sampler comprises horizontal bands of narrow repeat border patterns, crowns, coronets and alphabet and numerals. There are some wider bands of all-over patterns one of which depicts rectangular detached motifs, another a detached floral and bird motif and initials. The sampler is inscribed 'ANN PHIPPS 1721'.
