Description

Woollen border sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, Florentine and counted satin stitch. All the edges are bound with linen tape. A border of zigzags enclosing octagons and hearts surrounds the sampler. At the top there is an inscription which reads ' HAVERHILL SCHOOL' and at the bottom 'Hannah 1812 Bowtell'. A small geometric border pattern frames the verse ' Then will I set my Heart to find/ Inward Adornings of the Mind/ Knowledge and Virtue Truth and Grace/ These are the Robes of richest Dress/ no more shall Worms with me compare/ this is the Raiment Angels wear'. Below the verse a central motif of a vase of flowers with on either side a crown, birds, fruit baskets and flower sprays is worked.
