Description

Woollen sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in cross, long-armed cross, stem, tent, long and short, satin and back stitch with some couching. The top edge is left raw whilst the three other edges are bound with woollen braid. A border of detached naturalistic flowers, sprays and sprigs is worked on three sides and at the bottom two seated female figures in contemporary dress sit either side of a flower basket. The Lord's Prayer is inscribed in a central rectangular panel with winged cherubs' heads across the corners, linked by a floral border patterns. There is a rectangular panel in each bottom corner with worn inscriptions ' Mary Basham () work' and ' October () 21'.
