Description

Band sampler, linen, worked in silk and linen thread in a variety of stitches. The pattern includes horizontal repeating floral and geometric border patterns, two inscriptions, two sets of initials and two dates.

Linen band sampler embroidered with polychrome silks in double running, Montenegrin cross, satin, eyelet and trellis stitch. White linen thread is worked in hem, double running, counted satin, eyelet and stem stitch. There is some cut and drawn work with needle weaving, needlepoint lace filling stitches and a small panel of holliepoint. There is a plain selvedge at the top and bottom and the sides are hemmed. The sampler has five colourer band sat the top, three of which have horizontal repeating floral border patterns and two with the inscription ' eLIZABeTH CLOWDe/ HeR SAMPLeR 1678 R'. The final 'R' belongs to the name 'CLOWDer'. The elevn bands of whitework include geometric repeating border patterns, an alphabet and the inscription 'ABRAHAM CLOWDeR'. The holliepoint panel contains the letters 'A C' and 'e C' and the date '1679' the lower 18.75 cm is left blank.
