Sampler worked in polychrome silks depicting the four seasons.
Linen sampler embroidered with polychrome silks and gilt metal thread in tent, cross and long and short stitch combined with laid and couched work which completely covers the ground. The four seasons are represented by panels in each corner and smaller triangular panels which contain floral and figurative motifs are arranged around a central rectangle containing the verse' With light and song/comes sweet spring/golden sun ushers in/ balmy summer days/ autumn winds blow/ the tide ever flows/ winter brings snow/ which everyone knows'. The seasons are depicted as follows; Spring is a winged young boy blowing pipes to a background of trees in bloom, Summer is represented by a lady in a red an pink crinoline dress holding a parasol, Autumn is depicted by a girl dancing in the breeze and Winter is an old man in a purple gown in a snowy landscape. At the bottom of the piece is a tiny inscription which reads '1926 C.M. Thompson age 17'.
